Maven 2 Book Available: Better Builds with Maven

In case you haven't heard yet, the company I work for (Mergere) has just released the first edition of our new book about Maven 2. I had the privilege of contributing the chapter on plugin development. This book is a great way to get started with Maven, or simply brush up on some of the more advanced uses - like generating a project website for team collaboration, or writing your own plugins. BTW, FWIW, and XYZ (whatever that is), plugins are much easier to develop in Maven 2...no more icky Jelly scripting to muddle through. If you think you might be interested (good), or your company could use Maven to support its development effort (better), please get yourself a copy of Better Builds with Maven.

Got Feet?

In case you haven't notice from the other posts on this blog, I roast my own coffee. It's a wonderfully rewarding hobby for someone who enjoys (a) coffee, (b) gourmet things (if you could see me, this would be apparent), and (c) taking things to their logical conclusion. What I mean is, I get to taste all of the incredible variability from bean to bean...the coffee in its essential and unadulterated form, if you know what I mean. I once asked my mom if I could taste the flour when she was making cookies...I wanted to know what part of the taste I labeled "Chocolate Chip Cookie" was actually flour. This curiosity eventually led me - one day years later, when I was in my twenties - to smell freshly rubbed sage. I was pretty much shocked at what I smelled; this famous herb ...

Migrating from Blojsom to Pebble

WHEW! I just completed my migration from Blojsom to Pebble yesterday, and I can honestly say that was not for the faint of heart! Along the way, I realized two interesting things: mod_rewrite is my friend. I still know XSLT. (ugh.) Here's how it went. I had been having trouble restricting comments on my wife's blog to legitimate users, and had resorted to the only control mechanism I could get to work on Blojsom: a math test. In its raw form, it required the user to solve double-digit multiplication problems(!), but I'd managed to simplify that to only addition and subtraction problems - still double-digit, mind you. However, people still reported intermittent problems when commenting. Whether these were related to a bug in Blojsom or defective math skills I don't know, and it really doesn't matter; it's a stupid way to restrict commenting. I'd seen a little bit of traffic out there related to bloggers installing and using Pebble, and since the only blogs I read are those of other ...
