No rest for the sleepy
So, I've not been sleeping well lately. SHOCKING, I know. I'll give you a minute to crawl back up into your chair, having recently fallen out of it because you were so surprised at my sleep update. All settled? Good. Now, I was reading about Eden's on-going battle with insomnia the other day, and she mentioned that taking a calcium supplement with magnesium before bed helped her sleep. To which a commenter added that eating a banana and drinking a glass of milk had helped her sleep. So that's my new plan: eat a banana (food miles be damned!) and choke down a glass of milk before bed. Hopefully that will keep the night terrors AND the light sleeping AND the drooling at bay. Stay tuned.
Re: No rest for the sleepy
I get the worst insomnia. Since forever. I feel your pain. And...do you want to know what's helped me? Arrested Development. I'd been told time and again that watching TV before bed is a big no-no, so I never did. And then one night about a year ago out of desperation I threw on an old episode of Arrested Development after being up for, oh, four hours listening to the clanging of my anxieties (which multiply and grow into something I can't contain when I'm lying awake). Ten minutes into the re-run I was out like a light. My brain had switched off, as it tends to do when you're watching TV, and I was focused on something silly and light. I made it a routine and I now have a Pavlovian response to the Arrested Development theme song, where my eyes start to droop. It also helps me after nightmares to calm me and get me back to sleep. I know most doctors would balk at this advice, but *their* advice never helped! So if the milk and bananas doesn't work, you can try my bad/good advice: get your brain to click off with fluffy, amusing TV reruns! I see it as no worse of a crutch than medication to get me through my insomniac patches.
